Multiple Transformations of Qualitative Data

Friday 11th April, 2014

Overview of the day

“Qualitative methods illuminate both the ordinary within the worlds of fabulous people and events and also the fabulous elements of ordinary, mundane lives” (Ellingson, 2008, p.1).

This industrious QMiP event seeks to engage debates about integrating pluralisms regarding multiple methods, forms/representations.  The event is aimed at not only considering how we can draw on multiple forms of qualitative data but how we can transform qualitative data into multiple and creative forms to offer new ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘seeing’.  Creative methodologies are not particularly new in qualitative research, however, some are relatively new in Psychology fields where they can be used to “re-create lived experience and evoke emotional responses” (Richardson, 1994, p. 521).  Various presenters will be discussing their own integrated approaches and plural qualitative methods together with some of the challenges, predicaments - and delights - encountered when crystallising qualitative research.  In light of the move towards being able to communicate our research to the wider community, new forms of representations can be beneficial, purposeful and intentionally effective when aiming to communicate sensory, emotional, collective memories, intergenerational, and personal stories.
